Rising roughly 50 feet from the soft mud at a depth of approximately 150 feet, the structure appears less like a buried foundation and more like a massive object deliberately — or unexpectedly — left behind.

Unlike most caissons, which were ultimately filled with concrete or stone to become solid foundations, this structure appears to have never been fully filled. As a result, its interior remains open, revealing an intricate network of steel beams arranged in a radial and cross-braced pattern. These internal members were originally designed to reinforce the caisson during placement, helping it maintain shape and withstand pressure as it settled into position. Instead of disappearing inside a solid mass, the framework remains visible, giving divers a rare look into the skeleton of large-scale industrial engineering.

Near the base of the caisson, divers can observe a circular opening set into the lower wall. This feature was likely part of the original construction process — possibly an access point used during installation, sediment removal, or controlled flooding as the caisson was lowered into place.
