Milwaukee Carferry (1929)
This 338-foot railroad car ferry rests at 130 feet, requiring advanced diving skills such as a PADI Advanced Open Water certification or technical certification for decompression dives. The wreck sits upright on a sand and muck bottom, with the superstructure about 100 feet east of the hull. The bow faces southwest, and the cargo of tubs, along with most of the railroad cars (one has three cars in it), are still located on the wreck. Some of the stern box cars are missing, with at least one lying sideways on the deck. The engines and propellers remain in place, making this a thrilling dive for experienced divers. Prins Willem V (1954)
Known as the “Willie,” this Dutch freighter rests mostly intact on its side in about 80 feet of water on a clay bottom. It starts at about 55 feet, making it a wonderful introductory wreck dive where divers can stay shallower and still observe the massive 258-foot-long freighter. The ship’s machinery, cargo, and equipment are still in place. Large open hatches are visible on deck, and tanks from salvage attempts can be seen alongside the wreck. The Prins Willem V is arguably the most dived shipwreck out of Milwaukee and frequently ranks in top-five U.S. dive site lists in popular scuba magazines. Read more…, See Photos
