Sinking Detail
She was riding at anchor waiting out fog when she was rammed by the 300-ft steel steamer NORTHERN QUEEN. SAGAMORE was riding very low in the water and was practically invisible because of the normal low profile of whalebacks. She split amidships and sank very quickly. She had been the tow of the whaleback steamer PATHFINDER.

Shipwreck Description
This wreck lies at the entrance to the St. Mary’s River, Whitefish Bay. The wreck sits upright and mostly intact. The wide open hatches provide easy access for a swim throughout the wreck, and the collision damage is clear near the stern. The triple bow towrings are impressive, as is the sheer size of this wreck. This excellent site lies in the shipping lane directly out of the Sault locks, with immense freighters pouring out of there almost non-stop.
