Sinking Detail
Despite improved charts, navigational aids, designated shipping lanes, radio telephones, and eventually radar, big ships still go down in the Great Lakes.  Such was the case when the Norwegian ocean freighter Viator was rammed by the freighter Ormindale during a heavy fog northeast of Thunder Bay Island.  Viator went to the bottom in deeper water.

Shipwreck Description
The wreck sits upright on the lake bottom and is largely intact except for the collision damage.  The boxes of herring and fish products are still on display inside of the cargo holds.  Divers can observe an ocean vessel ship construction, not as commonly seen in the Great Lakes.
