Sinking Detail
Bound Buffalo for Chicago, she was struck nearly amidships by the schooner DEFIANCE on a dark night [one source says foggy] and cut almost in half. Both vessels sank quickly. A newspaper clipping gives the location as 15 miles below Pte Aux Barques.

Shipwreck Description
Shipwreck lies in 178 feet of water north Presque Isle. Built in 1854 at Cleveland, the 370 ton two masted brig sank later that same year in collision with the schooner Defiance. The Audubon mast lies over to the side and the bow is broken.
